The operator will significantly increase the price of its mobile subscriptions and here is what this means and for whom.

By email or SMS, Salt customers learned the painful news this week: the price of their telephone subscription is about to increase.

The words are well thought out to make you (at best) swallow the pill: “Thank you for choosing Salt as your mobile operator and for your trust. We are delighted to continue serving you this year!” explains the operator in a (one imagines) cheerful tone.

What follows is a very succinct assessment of a year 2024 during which Salt continued its “substantial investments to develop a first-class network”. Said network is recognized by Connect magazine for the second year in a row as “exceptional”, assures the operator. Just that.

To compensate for “increasing costs”

Then we move on to the big part, a context of “an increase in operational costs due to the increase in electricity expenses (+19% on average), insurance premiums and rents”.

An increase in charges that the operator says it has “absorbed largely thanks to efficiency measures”.

And this is where the ax falls: an “adjustment” of the subscription price from March 1, 2025. And this to compensate for “these increasing costs”.

Some customers more affected than others

Although probably frustrating for many, this increase is no less legal, since this type of adjustment is the subject of clauses in the operators’ general conditions.

The French-speaking Consumer Federation (FRC) explained this during a price increase in 2023 ????

According to the online comparison site moneyland.ch, the average price increase is 2% for all subscriptions. Or around 1 to 2 francs per subscription.

But customers who use a mobile subscription at the promotional price will be more strongly affected. For a 50% discount, the effective price increase is between 2.8 and 4.9%. For a 70% discount, the price increase reaches 4.6 to 8.1%.

Cancellation without fees?

Contacted by moneyland.chSalt says that it is possible for customers to cancel their contract free of charge within 30 days. Those who wish to do so should contact customer service by telephone or visit a Salt store.

The site nevertheless recalls that the operator had refused certain terminations during the last price increase. But it then maintained the affected subscriptions at the current prices until the minimum contract duration expired.

Note that Sunrise also announced an increase in prices on the same date. This should amount to around 1.8%.
