After 20 years at Air France, an airline pilot makes a rare and radical decision

After more than 20 years piloting planes for Air , Anthony Viaux made a radical decision: to abandon his position as captain. This choice, far from being motivated by a simple desire for change, is the result of in-depth reflection on the environmental impact of aviation.

Anthony Viaux explains that eco-anxiety played a key role in his decision. Aware of the CO₂ emissions generated by each flight, he questioned the consequences of his professional actions on the planet.

“Certain activities may consider decarbonizing quickly. However, I note that the aeronautics industry does not. The equation therefore currently seems insoluble to me, unless we reduce the number of flights, which is not at all the path we are heading towards.he confided on Linkedin.

Despite the promises of greener technologies, such as alternative fuels or electric planes, Anthony Viaux believes that these solutions will not be enough to counter the climate impact in the short term. As a result, he chose to reorient his life to be in line with his beliefs.

Since his resignation, this former pilot has turned to activities more in harmony with his ecological values. He devotes himself to naturopathy and music, while considering writing an essay on his experience as a pilot and the environmental challenges of aviation. “It was essential for me to find a new path that would allow me to contribute, in my own way, to the preservation of the planet,” he said.

Anthony Viaux’s gesture illustrates the dilemma faced by many people working in sectors that emit high levels of greenhouse gases. His choice, courageous and inspiring, raises questions about the necessary evolution of our lifestyles and consumption to respond to the climate emergency.
