One month after the previous one, a new increase in tobacco prices is planned for February 1st. However, it will not concern all brands. One of them will increase the price of its cigarettes to 13.50 euros per pack.
After an increase on January 1, 2025, which saw the majority of cigarette packets reach the price of 12.50 euros, a new increase is planned for Saturday February 1. Which brands are affected by this increase? When will the following ones take place? RMC Conso explains.
Dunhills reach 13.60 euros
While the increase on January 1st affected almost all tobacco brands, the increase which is due to occur on February 1st will be more limited. Only a few brands are affected by the decree of January 14 relating to the retail prices of tobacco.
The increase this time concerns:
– Packages of Dunhill (Blue, Silver and Red) in 20 units, go from 13.20 to 13.50 euros. The packages of Dunhill Rouge Select in 20 units even go from 13.30 to 13.60 euros.
– Packages of Gauloises Blondes (Red, Blue and White) in 20 units go from 12.30 to 12.50 euros.
– Packages of Fortuna (Blue and Red) in 20 Units go from 11.70 to 11.90 euros.
Other brands like News, JPS, Bastos or Davidoff increase the price of their manufactured cigarettes. But this new increase also concerns several packets of rolling tobacco.

A new increase planned for March
In its National Tobacco Control Strategy 2023-2027, the Ministry of Health affirms its desire to increase the price of the packet to 13 euros by 2027. A threshold already reached by some brands such as Dunhill. But within two years, this will be the case for everyone.
In this perspective, further increases are expected in the months to come. Including one the following month? According to Capital, a third consecutive increase is planned for March 1st. It could concern many brands, and be of the order of 50 to 75 euro cents per package. The following could take place in June, then in September and/or November.
A package price consisting mainly of taxes
The price of tobacco has increased considerably in recent years. This is explained by the State’s desire to fight against smoking. “The price lever is what works best,” says the Ministry of Health in its latest plan to combat tobacco.
As a result, taxes levied by the State constitute up to 80% of the sale price of a pack of cigarettes. There are two: the excise on tobacco and the value added tax (VAT). The rest of the price of a packet of tobacco is made up of the tobacconist’s margin (8 to 10%) and that of the manufacturer, which can reach 15%.
As a reminder, the term “excise” refers to “indirect taxes on the sale or use of certain products, in particular alcohol, tobacco and energy. Revenue from excise taxes goes entirely to the countries to which these rights have been paid”, explains the European Union website.
