U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday he wants to meet quickly with Russian President Vladimir Putin to secure an end to the nearly three-year-old war with Ukraine, lamenting what he called the enormous loss of life human.
In the run-up to his Nov. 5 election victory, Mr. Trump said dozens of times that he would put in place a Ukraine-Russia deal on his first day in office, if not before. His advisers now acknowledge that it will take months to resolve the war.
“I would really like to be able to meet with President Putin soon to end this war,” said Mr. Trump, who returned to the White House on Monday, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, by video link.
“And it’s not from the point of view of the economy or anything else. It’s from the point of view of the millions of lives that are wasted […]. It’s carnage. We really need to end this war.”
-Trump also said U.S. efforts to secure a peace deal were now hopefully underway, but did not elaborate.
