The Wanzois Christophe Lacroix returned to the charge by once again defending the recognition as a national memorial of Fort de Huy as well as the Dossin barracks in Mechelen. And there, Arizona refused to vote on the bill. “This text would however have made it possible to guarantee the preservation of the Huy fort and the Dossin barracks and to transmit their history to future generations”explains Christophe Lacroixs who says he regrets “bitterly” that Arizona did not allow such a proposal to be voted on. Lack of voting “constitutes a slap in the face to the resistance fighters of yesterday, today and tomorrow”.

Memory work is a key skill for the Federal State and Defense, particularly through institutions such as the WHI and the War Heritage Institute. Under the previous legislature, a significant effort was made to strengthen the WHI, “in particular through the adoption of a strategic plan for the period 2021-2025”recalls the Wanzois. This plan aims to promote Belgian places of memory via a new proactive policy which aims to make them accessible to as many people as possible. Gold, “Fort de Huy, an emblematic site of our history, is fully part of this approach”notes the Wanzois. It bears witness to the major events which shaped our history. Recognizing it as a national place of memory would have been “totally legit”.

Hutois Samuel Cogolati, today co-president of Ecolo, shares this disappointment. “It is absolutely scandalous to block this symbolic recognition”especially since it didn’t involve anything financially…
