Lorenzo Sonego fought to the end in this Australian Open. Surprising quarter-finalist, the Italian was valiant against Ben Shelton but could not prevent the American from triumphing, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, 7-6(4). Offensive, Sonego hit 63 winners and hit the net 90 times. A panache which was not enough but which is to be welcomed. Furthermore, before this tournament, the 55th in the world had only reached the third round of a hard-court Grand Slam tournament once. The performance therefore remains very satisfactory.

“It has changed a lot in the last two years”
At a press conference, Sonego was full of praise for Shelton. “It has changed a lot in the two years since we played in Paris. He has improved a lot on serve and forehand. Today he didn’t make a mistake, he’s a great player and he has a lot of confidence in himself right now.” Brilliant on clay, the Italian will try to do better Roland-Garros, where he has already reached the round of 16 twice.
