This Bookstore Became a Lifeline During the Los Angeles Fires

Octavia’s Bookshelf, Pasadena’s first black bookstore, has always been more than just a store, it’s a cornerstone of the community. When wildfires ravaged Los Angeles County, this welcoming bookstore stepped up in an unexpected way. Over the past two weeks, heis transformed into a support center, providing food, water and supplies to residents in need.

“The goal has always been to serve the community, and that means different things at different times. Right now, it means something other than books,” Kiki Williams told NBC News. After the Eaton Fire which ravaged parts of Pasadena and Altadena, displacing families and cutting off power to entire neighborhoods, Ms. High opened her bookstore to make it a resource center for disaster victims.

The transformation happened almost overnight, as word quickly spread and neighbors began dropping off donations. In a few hours, the store was filled with water bottles, hygiene products, blankets, etc.

Named in honor of legendary science fiction author Octavia E. Butler, the bookstore has always been a beacon of inclusion and resilience. Known for its collection of books by BIPOC authors and for its role as a creative gathering space, Octavia’s Bookshelf has been deeply connected to the local community since its opening.

For now, the bookstore is a testament to the power of community support, proving that it’s more than just a place to sell books, it’s a symbol of hope and resilience.
