Tennis – Qualified for the semi-finals of the Australian Open, American Ben Shelton does not appreciate the way players are treated during post-match interviews
After Novak Djokovic, Ben Shelton? While the Serbian had decided to boycott the post-match interview, in the wake of his round of 16, after an Australian journalist ironically made fun of him, the American could also move on to the ‘act. As he advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open, Shelton said Wednesday he was shocked by the way players were treated in post-match on-court interviews.
At a press conference, following his victory against Lorenzo Sonego, the 22-year-old American explained at the end of his press conference that Djokovic’s case was not “isolated”. “When Learner Tien beat Medvedev, his post-match interview seemed awkward and disrespectful to me,” Shelton explained, before detailing comments made towards him that he found inappropriate.
“Something that needs to change”
“When someone says to me after a match: ‘Monfils is old enough to be your father. Maybe he’s your father?’ Or today (Wednesday) on court when I was asked: “Hey Ben, how do you feel about the idea that no matter who your opponent is, no one will cheer for you [en demi-finale] “That may be true, but I don’t think this comment is respectful coming from a man I’ve never met in my life,” lamented the American.
