The quarter-finals of the Australian Open continue in the men’s draw. While the first poster for the semi-finals is known and will pit Djokovic against Zverev, it’s time for the meeting between Ben Shelton and Lorenzo Sonego.
The American, seeded number 21, is the favorite against the 29-year-old Italian who is playing his first Grand Slam quarter-final.
The two players offered spectacle and suspense. While Shelton seemed to be heading for a victory without having to draw on his physical resources, the 22-year-old was challenged by Sonego who didn’t give up.
The latter tried his luck by going to the net on numerous occasions, even making some spectacular shots.
-But Shelton, throughout the match, created more break opportunities than his opponent who was not unworthy, but who lost in four sets (6-4, 7-5, 4- 6, 7-6 in 3h50).
Ben Shelton is qualified for his second Grand Slam semi-final after that of the 2023 US Open and becomes the youngest American to reach the final four in Melbourne since Andy Roddick in 2003.
He will face Jannik Sinner or Alex De Minaur who will face each other in the last quarter-final of the day on the Rod Laver Arena.
