War in Ukraine: Trump would impose sanctions on Russia if Putin does not negotiate an end to the conflict

The United States has already imposed significant sanctions on Russia over the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (January 21) that he would likely impose sanctions on Russia if his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, refused to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

Donald Trump did not provide details on these possible sanctions. The United States has already imposed significant sanctions on Russia over the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The US president said his administration was examining the issue of sending weapons to Ukraine, adding that he believed the European Union should do more to support Kyiv. “We are talking to (Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky), we will talk to President (Vladimir) Putin very soon,” he said. Donald Trump said he pressed Chinese President Xi Jinping to intervene to end the war in Ukraine when he spoke with him.

This announcement comes the day after Trump’s return to the White House as the 47th President of the United States, succeeding Joe Biden, a major supporter of Ukraine since the start of the conflict. The departure of the latter raised fears in particular of a disengagement of the United States alongside Kyiv.
