The Grand Kartal Hotel, located in the famous Kartalkaya ski resort, was the scene of a dramatic fire on the night of January 21, 2025. The fire, which is believed to have started in the hotel’s restaurant, quickly spread spread due to the hotel’s wooden structure. At the time of the tragedy, the hotel was almost full, welcoming around 238 people for the winter school holidays.
The toll is heavy: 76 dead et 51 injuredsome in critical condition. Testimonies speak of the absence of functional fire alarms, forcing many customers to evacuate in panic.
Nine people, including the hotel owner, were arrested as part of the investigation opened by the authorities. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a national day of mourning and promised those responsible would be brought to justice. This drama reignites the debate on safety standards in Turkish tourist infrastructure.
