The Mexican coach highlighted his long-standing positive relationship with the Argentines, suggesting the real question is whether the Argentines underestimate their Mexican counterparts.

The Mexican national team is due to face River Plate in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, marking their presence on Argentine soil. Before this meeting, Javier Aguirre was asked about Lionel Messi’s recent celebration, judged by many to be a gesture against America fans. This incident sparked great outrage among Mexican fans.

In a press conference before the match, Aguirre was asked about Messi’s celebration, but he chose to avoid controversy, especially on Argentinian soil. He said the question should be asked of Argentines regarding their perceptions of Mexicans and Mexican soccer. Aguirre confirmed that his experiences with the Argentine people have been largely positive.

“It’s not a question for me, it’s something that should be asked of them about how they perceive us (if they underestimate Mexican football in Argentina). I have always respected Argentinians, having had Argentinian teammates and players under my management, which resulted in a fantastic relationship. I consider their football to be export quality, daring and very intense,” Aguirre said.

The Mexico coach also addressed the controversial celebration, indicating that he refrains from commenting on whether Messi’s actions were disrespectful, as he has known the Argentina captain for many years, often as a rival in Spain’s Primera División . Out of respect for Messi, Aguirre prefers to avoid the contentious subject.

“I will not answer this question because we have the greatest respect for Leo. I have known him for years and faced him many times as a coach on the bench. I’m choosing not to respond because it’s not something I consider important at this time. I appreciate your question, but I would prefer if you asked me another one,” he concluded.
