As we know, Belgium has an important deadline in March with two Nations League matches which should allow it to stay in League A.
Until then, a new coach will have to be appointed and he will have to make decisions about the players with whom he wants to take on the challenges that will present themselves to him. In particular, he will have to resolve the issue of several players who have not been seen for some time.
Courtesy back in goal?
This will obviously be the case for Thibaut Courtois, who no longer wanted to represent Belgium in the presence of Domenico Tedesco. With the coach gone, a door could open if the Italian-German’s successor succeeds in convincing the goalkeeper to make his return. If Casteels is not unworthy and Sels has an extraordinary season at Nottingham Forest, counting on the best goalkeeper in the world would obviously be a serious plus.
More solidity behind but also perhaps up front, if Michy Batshuayi is called up by the new coach. Having proven that he had lost none of his sense of goal since playing in Turkey, Batsman however did not have the opportunity to help the Devils, even when Romelu Lukaku was not present.
-Experience at the service of the group?
Loyal to Martinez, Hans Vanaken is one of those who were sacrificed by Tedesco. The Bruges resident will only be called up once by the Italian-German, in June 2023. Since then, nothing.
Long injured, Thorgan Hazard was not called up before his injury by Tedesco. Victim of the tactical plan of the now ex-coach, the Anderlecht player could be an important player, he who is gradually returning to his best level at the club.
Finally there is Alexis Saelemaekers, who is a tireless worker and an important player for the club over the last two seasons. He notably participated greatly in the success of Bologna, which qualified for the Champions League last season.
