War in Ukraine – IRIS

Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched on February 24, 2022, shifted the conflict that began in 2014 into another dimension. Military, energy, humanitarian, food, political and economic: the parameters of war are multiplied and its consequences go far beyond the belligerents.

How far can Ukraine be able to fight for its sovereignty? How is Vladimir Putin’s regime responding to the difficulties linked to the war he started?

Russian aggression constitutes a rude awakening for Europeans, which renews the question of the defense of the continent. The European Union thus finds itself thrown back into the debates on its impotence and its dependence which took precedence at the turn of the 21st century.e century. The United States also faces a dilemma in its support for Ukraine, with its involvement in Europe competing with its desire for influence in the Middle East and the Pacific. What consequences could Donald Trump’s return to power then have on their commitment?

The war in Ukraine has many consequences in other regions of the world and reveals new or simply nascent strategic trends on the eve of the outbreak of the conflict. The countries of the so-called “global South” seem to wish to alienate neither the Western camp nor Russia. Their reactions, however, are varied, with some seeing the war as an opportunity to assert their interests while others are suffering from a conflict which disrupts international trade, particularly in cereals. The conflict thus acts as a catalyst for restructuring international balances.
