MELBOURNE, Australia — Daniil Medvedev has been fined a total of $76,000 following his recent outings in the early rounds of the Australian Open.

Details of the fines were made public by tournament organizers on Sunday, just two days after Medvedev suffered an unexpected exit in the second round.

The 2021 US Open champion expressed his frustration by damaging a camera positioned near the net, hitting it repeatedly with his racket during a tense five-set bout against 418th-ranked Thai Kasidit Samrej in the first round . For this incident, he was fined $10,000.

Continuing his expression of displeasure, Medvedev lost a point in his second round match against young American qualifier Learner Tien, resulting in an additional fine of $66,000 due to additional code violations.

After losing his serve to find himself 4-3 in the second set, Medvedev responded by throwing his equipment towards the lines, sliding it across the court until it collided with a billboard near his bench.

In angry moments, Medvedev hit a ball against the back wall, knocked over a camera behind the baseline and railed against his racket bag. He was also annoyed by back-to-back foot foul calls that resulted in a double fault during a deciding tiebreaker in the second set.

The match, which lasted 4 hours and 49 minutes, concluded shortly before 3 a.m. Friday.

Ranked fifth at Melbourne Park, Medvedev has been runner-up in three of the last four tournaments played here, including last year’s edition.

This tournament marks Medvedev’s first appearance this season, following the recent birth of his second child, and the 28-year-old Russian has struggled to return to his best on court.
