In a thrilling encounter at the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich snatched a hard-fought 3-2 victory against VfL Wolfsburg, cementing their place at the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday. This success, marked by two goals from Leon Goretzka, allows Bayern to extend its lead to seven points over the reigning champions, Bayer Leverkusen.

The match got off to a flying start with Bayern’s Leroy Sane hitting the crossbar just three minutes after kick-off. Goretzka opened the scoring in the 20th minute, with a powerful 22-yard strike that found the net after hitting the post.

However, Wolfsburg responded quickly by simply equalizing four minutes later through Mohamed Amoura, who capitalized on their first real chance. The hosts regained the lead before the break when Michael Olise fired a shot from distance.

A potential chance for Bayern presented itself when Harry Kane found himself alone in the box, but his shot was saved by Wolfsburg defender Denis Vavro. Joshua Kimmich thought he had scored a goal late in the first half, converting a precise cross from Kingsley Coman, but his effort was ruled out for a handball.

Bayern continued to dominate after the break, with Goretzka heading his second goal off the post shortly after the hour mark, making it 3-1. Despite a series of opportunities to seal the match, the Bavarians failed to materialize, with Coman notably missing a clear opportunity by shooting wide when he only had the goalkeeper to beat following a defensive error by Wolfsburg.

In a surprising turnaround, Wolfsburg capitalized on their late comeback in the match, with Amoura scoring his second goal in the 88th minute, thanks to a remarkable run from substitute winger Tiago Tomas which created a thrilling finale.

After the match, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany acknowledged the challenge posed by Wolfsburg, saying: “Even before the match I had the feeling that it would be difficult. They are on a good run and are dangerous. I I’m happy with the result, and it’s a good start to the new year.” The victory marks Bayern’s third consecutive league victory this season.

“At Bayern, winning every game is a requirement, and we intend to continue this momentum in our next meeting. We are in a good phase at the moment, which is essential,” Kompany added.

With this success, Bayern Munich secured their fourth consecutive league victory, totaling 45 points, which puts them comfortably ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, who are due to face Borussia Mönchengladbach later. Meanwhile, Wolfsburg remain in seventh place with 27 points.
