Hostage Agreement: Israel Set to Release More Than 1,900 Palestinian Prisoners

According to details of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, Israel plans to release a total of 1,904 Palestinian prisoners, including 737 detainees and security prisoners, including many terrorists sentenced to life for murder, members of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Fatah.

The agreement also provides for the release of 1,167 Palestinians arrested in Gaza during the IDF ground offensive, who did not participate in the attacks of October 7, 2023.

The release process will begin on Sunday with the first three hostages from the list of 33 humanitarian cases (women, children, elderly and sick people). The other 30 hostages in this category will be released every Saturday during the 42 days of the agreement.

The exchange will follow a specific ratio:

30 Palestinian prisoners for every woman, child or elderly person

110 prisoners for all nine sick hostages

50 prisoners for every female IDF soldier

-

30 prisoners for each of the two long-term hostages (Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed)

47 Palestinians released during the Shalit agreement in 2011 and rearrested since

More than 1,000 Gazan detainees will be released in exchange for the remains of hostages included in the first phase.

This first step marks the start of a complex process of exchanges which will extend over several weeks.
