The American government announced on Friday January 17 a new list of 15 drugs, including the star anti-obesity drugs Wegovy and Ozempic, whose prices it wants to negotiate with pharmaceutical laboratories. The major Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), enacted in August 2022provides for the possibility for the authorities to open a discussion procedure relating to the prices of certain medicines.
The objective is to limit, or even eliminate, the remainder to be paid for beneficiaries of the Medicare public health coverage programaccessible to Americans aged 65 and over. The approach should also allow the State to reduce the cost that reimbursement for these medications represents for it.
After initially trying to contest this process, the major laboratories ended up joining in, because refusal exposed them to heavy sanctions.
