NARRATIVE – The pope signed two works in less than a year, between confidences and reflections, on his past, his hope, his trials, but without revelations. For the sake of his posterity.

Pope Francis, 88 years old, will therefore have published two autobiographies in less than a year. The latest, available this week in from Albin Michel, is entitled Hope. The previous one, Vivrewas released only ten months ago, on March 20, 2024, by Harper Collins. Without meeting with great success: 3,578 sales in France according to GFK, the reference in bookstores.

The two works have things in common: they are released worldwide in around a hundred countries; they are co-written by Italian journalists, chosen by Francis far from the circle of Vaticanists; and, finally, the volumes resemble each other like twins. If the latest addition therefore offers little in the way of novelty, it nevertheless presents a strangeness: two-thirds of the autobiography deals in a meticulous manner with Francis’ youth and life in Argentina, the pontificate being approached in a very condensed manner, as on hover.
