Belgium have fired coach Domenico Tedesco after a series of disappointing results in recent months.
The decision had been widely expected for weeks, especially after Tedesco did not appear in the qualifying draw for the 2026 World Cup in December. It was officially notified at a meeting of the Belgian Football Federation on Friday, according to reports.
Tedescowho was under contract until 2026, leaves after the Belgium exited last year’s European Championship in the round of 16 and finished third in their Nations League group in the second half of 2024, winning just one game in six.
His position became untenable after the defeat of the Belgium facing Israel in Hungary in their final Nations League match in November.
The mandate of Tedesco started brightly, going unbeaten in his first 13 matches in charge of the team after taking over from Roberto Martinez at the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
-But by then he had already argued with Thibaut Courtoiswho had refused to play for the national team as long as the German coach of Italian origin was in charge of the Belgian team.
During the last ten matches of Tedescothe Belgium had just two wins, were stuck in the Euro 2024 group stage and had poor results in the Nations League.
Belgian media have speculated in recent days about a possible successor, including a return of Thierry Henrywho was the assistant of Martinez for a while. According to the Teamit could also be Rudi Garcia.
