Joan Plowright, officially “Dame” Joan Plowright after being promoted to Dame Commander (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004, began her career on the London stage. Joining the Royal Court Theater troupe in 1956, she distinguished herself in several classics, including the play “Rhinoceros” by Ionesco. It was this theatrical experience that allowed her to meet Laurence Olivier, a famous British actor, whom she married in 1961.
Her career continued for seven decades and she also starred in several Hollywood feature films such as “Moby Dick” in 1956 and, much later, in “101 Dalmatians” in 1996 where she played the family nanny. She also appears in other films aimed at young audiences such as “Denis la Malice” or “The Spiderwick Chronicles”.
