For its new project, Netflix brings together beautiful people. Without revolutionizing anything, “Back In Action” is unpretentious family entertainment, to be discovered today.
Fifteen years ago, Emily and Matt, CIA shock agents, decided to call it quits. Today, they live a calm life and try, with difficulty, to understand their two children, Leo (Rylan Jackson) and Alice (McKenna Roberts). But the past soon catches up with them, and the couple has no choice but to set off with their family on an explosive mission.
From “Spy Kids” to “True Lies”, in cinema and on streaming platforms, being secret agents is a family affair. And it’s not the director Seth Gordon (“How to kill your boss”, “Baywatch: Baywatch”) who can claim the opposite. Helped with the screenplay Brendan O’Brien (“Our worst neighbors”), he offers with “Back In Action” a muscular family comedy, lacking a truly daring scenario and memorable production.

Yet, with delight, we still find Cameron Diaz. Last seen in the 2014 version of the musical “Annie”, already alongside Jamie Foxxshe was absent from cinemas for around ten years in order to concentrate on her children. “Charlie and His Odd Ladies” (2000) had already proven that the actress is as comfortable in action moments as in more comical ones.
With Jamie Foxxshe forms a lovely family, completed by the two young actors and actresses, Rylan Jackson et McKenna Robertsand by a Glenn Close superbly magnetic. And if the writing struggles to exploit the comic and emotional potential of its plot, “Back In Action” remains a friendly and light entertainment, perfect for escaping the routine of everyday life.
-Available on Netflix since January 17.
