In fact, 56% of French people have an electricity contract that is poorly suited to their household habits, according to a study carried out in September 2024 by the supplier Octopus Energy. This represents for customers some 315 million euros wasted each year, including more than 25 million euros for the inhabitants of Occitanie alone.
The power of an electric meter, expressed in kilovolt-amperes (kVA), corresponds to the maximum amount of electricity that can be used simultaneously. The greater the subscribed power, the more expensive the subscription. For example, switching from a 12 kVA subscription to 9 kVA saves around 40 euros per year.

To check the adequacy between the power of its meter and its actual use, Octopus has put a free service online, called Opti’Compteur.
By entering your last name, first name as well as your Delivery Point (PDL, the 14-digit identification number of the electric meter), the tool indicates if the power of the meter is oversized, the level which would be adapted to the actual consumption of the household and the amount that could thus be saved per year. So much information which will then allow you to either adjust your contract with your supplier or change it.
