The two men offered a superb 3h37 show to the audience at the 1573 Arena. There was suspense until the end of the match, the Brazilian obtained a break point at 3-3 in the fifth set but was unable to convert it.
A first since 2023 in a Grand Slam
Opposite, the Italian found the opening in the following game and did not tremble to conclude the match at 5-3 on his serve. This is the first time since Roland-Garros 2023 that Lorenzo Sonego has gone beyond the second round at a Grand Slam.
Sonego, ranked 55th in the ATP, will face Hungarian Fabian Marozsan in the third round of the Australian Grand Slam.
