- A mysterious C button could be used for voice chat.
The Nintendo Switch 2: a step towards the future of video games
A Nintendo announcement regarding the Switch 2 is rumored to be scheduled for January 16, 2025. While this announcement could be just a preview of a larger launch planned for later this year, it is preceded by numerous leaks on what to expect from the highly anticipated Switch sequel.
A more powerful console in perspective
New leaks point to a more powerful GPU for Nintendo’s next console. On the Famiboards forums, a site known for its numerous video game leaks, leaker and dataminer ZachyCatGames posted that the Switch 2’s GPU clock speed could reach or exceed 560 MHz in portable mode. To put this number into perspective, the Valve Steam Deck’s GPU runs around 1.6 GHz with around 1.6 TFLOPs of performance. If the rumor is true, the Switch 2 would reach 1.72 TFLOPs in portable mode. Additionally, the speed is expected to almost double in docked mode, reaching 1,007.3 MHz or approximately 3.09 TFLOPs. While this performance isn’t on par with the PS4 or PS4 Pro, it’s still significantly better than the original Nintendo Switch.
-The mysterious C button
Another rumor comes to us from a Discord server dedicated to the Switch 2. There users discovered how Nintendo plans to use the new C button which was seen in leaked images of the Switch 2. According to them, the latest firmware Nintendo mentions a feature called “Campus”. It would be linked to voice and group chat support for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. This “Campus” feature would also allow screen sharing and the creation of discussion groups of up to 12 people. It is therefore likely that the C refers to “cat” rather than “Campus”. This discovery contradicts previous rumors which suggested that the C button was for screenshots.
An expected announcement
However, there remains a lot of uncertainty surrounding these rumors. For example, the idea of a chat feature is surprising, as Nintendo has always favored a very kid-focused approach to the Switch’s social features, which has often led to no voice chat on the device . Additionally, the source of this information is not clearly identified, which adds a layer of skepticism. Either way, we’ll know more on January 16, 2025, if the rumors of a Switch reveal prove true.
