The Chez Georges refuge, located on the cross-country ski trails of Mont Grand-Fonds, was completely destroyed by fire last week. The origin of the fire remains unknown.
“We think it happened in the area around the chimney, but we don’t know more,” comments the station’s general manager, Sébastien Tremblay.
The Mont Grand-Fonds team observed the damage on January 8. The entire building burned down and the fire eventually extinguished itself. An intervention by the firefighters would have been laborious in any case according to the CEO, the refuge being difficult to access.
Even if “analyses are carried out by the insurer, the refuge will be rebuilt this summer,” confirms Sébastien Tremblay.
The Chez Georges refuge, located about seven kilometers from the resort’s reception chalet, dates back more than 50 years, i.e. since the beginning of the history of Mont Grand-Fonds.
