Quebec could lose “up to 100,000 jobs” if the American president-elect, Donald Trump, decided to impose customs tariffs of 25%, according to François Legault.

“It could be up to 100,000 jobs, so it is still important for the Quebec economy and we must ensure that we negotiate as quickly as possible with Mr. Trump to remove these tariffs and be able to continue working together for the benefit of both places,” he declared in an interview with Paul Larocque at LCN.

The Prime Minister, however, assures that he is working to find solutions in the event of the loss of these jobs.

“It is certain that if jobs are lost in the manufacturing sector in the coming months, the next years, well I will work to ensure that there is as little impact as possible for Quebecers, so watch other alternatives to attract jobs in other sectors,” he said.

He is banking in particular on Hydro-Québec and its major projects which are in development and which could create many jobs.

Infrastructure projects are also an avenue analyzed by the Legault government.
