This Wednesday, two people died in accidents on Aisne roads affected by ice, firefighters and local authorities announced.
A first fatal accident occurred around 7 a.m. in Bergues-sur-Sambre. “A light vehicle deviated from its lane and collided head-on with a heavy goods vehicle,” detailed the gendarmerie. The 19-year-old driver of the car died.
“These accidents are certainly linked to ice”
Shortly before 8 a.m., another accident between a car and a two-wheeler took place between Rozoy-sur-Serre and Brunehamel. The moped rider, aged 18, died after being “struck from behind”, again according to the gendarmerie.
“The investigation is still ongoing, but these accidents are certainly linked to the ice. The climatic conditions, grip and visibility, are strongly in question”, in particular due to a “thick fog”, explained to AFP a communications officer from the department’s gendarmerie.
This Wednesday, Aisne was not the subject of any vigilance by Météo-France. However, “the state of passability of the roads throughout the department deteriorated at the end of the night with the appearance of patches of ice”, according to the prefecture.
