The BBC has officially announced its succession plan for its flagship football highlights programme, Match of the Dayconfirming that three high-profile hosts will take over the lead presenting role starting next season. It follows the announcement that Gary Lineker, who has been the face of the show since 1999, will bid farewell to his long-standing position at the end of the season.
Starting next season, the torch will be passed to a trio of talented presenters: Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan, each bringing their unique style and expertise to this iconic program.
Gabby Logan, a familiar figure on the BBC’s rugby and athletics coverage, has highlighted the “enormous responsibility” that comes with the role, saying it is crucial to strike a balance between the evolution of the show and the respect for the cherished traditions that have made Match of the Day an essential name. “Viewers want the key moments – the goals, incidents and highlights that spark conversations. While innovation is essential, the essence must remain focused on football,” she said.
Kelly Cates, who will easily blend her new responsibilities with her current role at Sky Sports, expressed her excitement, saying: “The moment I sit in that chair and hear the credits music, I know it will be incredibly special. Having worked with many experts previously, I can’t wait to begin this new journey with them.”
Mark Chapman, who will retain his place on BBC Radio 5 Live, expressed his humility at taking on such a prestigious role, saying: “I have great respect for the presenters who came before me and the history rich in Match of the Day. It’s an honor to be part of this legacy.”
Although Gary Lineker is set to step down as presenter of Match of the Dayhe will remain with the BBC, taking charge of the network’s coverage for the upcoming 2026 World Cup and hosting coverage of the FA Cup during the 2025/26 season.
