A fire broke out early Tuesday evening at the La Pataterie restaurant, at the corner of Victoria and Jacques-Cartier streets in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.

Firefighters from the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Fire Safety Department are on site to try to limit the damage.

“The fire started at the roof,” confirmed Éric Diamond, of the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Fire Department. In fact, it appears to be a short circuit in a light fixture that was on the roof. There would have been a slight spread on the flat roof.”

The firefighters removed an electrical wire on which traces of carbonization were discovered during their exploration. The damage would be limited to between $1000 and $1500, Mr. Diamond estimated.

The intervention took place in the middle of supper time. The evacuation of employees and customers was rapid. While the smoke would not have invaded the dining room.

Vehicle traffic was diverted onto Avenue du Centenaire, southbound, from the traffic light. Victoria Street is also closed between Académie and Nicholson.
