Dressed all in gray, Antoine Gravel briefly appeared at the Montreal courthouse by videoconference, the day after the violent attack.

Pinned shortly after the tragedy by patrol officers, the 29-year-old man now also faces charges of serious assault and having concealed a knife.

Montreal police set up a large perimeter after the attempted murder on Monday.

The alleged crimes allegedly occurred in a context of domestic violence. The exact relationship between the accused and the 34-year-old victim, however, has not been clarified by the authorities.

Gravel seemed irritated when he learned that the order prohibiting him from communicating with the complainant did not also apply to her.

“Could this person contact me?” he said, visibly frustrated.

Nebulous origin

The Crown obviously opposed his release.

Antoine Gravel will return to court on Wednesday for the continuation of the proceedings regarding the tragedy which took place during the afternoon, Monday, in an apartment building on rue Saint-Urbain, very close to the intersection of the rue Marie-Anne.

The victim was bleeding profusely after being stabbed in the neck. She was rushed to hospital to treat her significant injuries.

Montreal police then announced that her health condition had stabilized and that she was out of danger.

As of Tuesday, she was still unable to meet with investigators and provide details about the circumstances of the case. The origin of the conflict would therefore remain nebulous.

The suspect was arrested in the middle of Sherbrooke Street, at the corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard, more than a kilometer from the crime scene.

“I didn’t do anything! I didn’t do anything! “It’s nonsense,” he shouted while the police searched him.

Stays in jail

Antoine Gravel is also accused of having violated release orders which prohibited him from possessing a weapon, indicates a denunciation document.

The Montrealer has also made numerous appearances before the court in recent years.

He was convicted of assault, obstruction and driving while impaired.

The largest sentence he received was 180 days for possession of substances for the purpose of trafficking, according to our research.

However, he was arrested again in 2024 for possession. In this case, he is expected to return to court in February.
