Cheese manufacturers are finally prohibited from mentioning or illustrating a Norman origin on the packaging of a non-PDO Camembert. The Caen administrative court had nevertheless maintained the authorization on February 12, 2024. But the Nantes Administrative Court of Appeal ruled in favor of the National Institute of Origin and Quality (Inao) on January 10. The practice was deemed misleading for the consumer, who might believe they were buying Camembert de Normandie AOP.
So no more mentions like “made in Normandy” as well as the Norman flags on the boxes. Some, like that of the President Camembert (Lactalis) for example, will have to be redesigned. The mention of Norman origin of the milk remains authorized if it is indicated on the back of the box.
