Stan Wawrinka (ATP 156) did not achieve any feat this Tuesday in Melbourne. For the third consecutive year, the Vaudois was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open. Beaten by Alex Molcan and Adrian Mannarino in previous seasons, it was this time against the Italian Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 55) that Stan lost in four sets (6-4 5-7 7-5 7-5), during ‘a meeting marked by an anthology point.

We were in the 3rd set and the score was extremely close. Sonego won the first set, Wawrinka the second and the two players were 5-5 in the third. The Vaudois was in a bad situation, he had to erase two break points to stay alive in the game when the Italian released this shot:

An armed passing with his back turned to the net, a genius move which allowed Lorenzo Sonego to race towards victory. He indeed won the set (7-5) then the fourth set by the same score (7-5), therefore the match after 3h12′ of effort.

The agency ats believes, however, that at almost 40 years old (he will celebrate on March 28), “Stan Wawrinka demonstrated, despite this defeat, that he still had his place on the Circuit.” And to add: “His performance should encourage Severin Lüthi to find the right words to convince him to play the Davis Cup match against Spain. His entry into singles would be perfectly justified.”

The meeting between the Swiss and the Spaniards will take place on February 1 and 2, 2025 in the Swiss Arena in Bienne.
