Ottawa, Canada – January 14 (ANI): Famed English football coach Casey Stoney has officially been named the new coach of the Canadian Women’s National Team (CANWNT).
Stoney, who previously managed San Diego Wave FC, took the reins of the club in 2021 following a successful three-year stint with Manchester United Women. She was fired from her position last June after leading the Wave in 74 matches, during which they celebrated 28 victories. Before that, she had accumulated an impressive record with Manchester United, with 52 victories in 77 matches.
Expressing her excitement, Stoney said: “I am honored to join Canada Soccer as coach of the women’s national team.” She added: “Canada has a rich heritage in women’s football and I look forward to working with such a talented team.”

She emphasized her commitment to working with the federation’s new leadership, saying: “Together, we aim to build on past successes and continue to elevate the sport in Canada, both on and off the field.” Stoney also expressed his eagerness to engage with the exciting Canadian fan base, remarking: “I look forward to the journey ahead and connecting with the incredible enthusiasm of the Canadian fans.”
It is worth noting that Stoney has a previous professional relationship with Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, having coached her during their time together in the National Women’s Soccer League. Under Stoney’s mentorship, Sheridan flourished, winning Goalkeeper of the Year in their inaugural season together.
Stoney’s track record includes winning the FA Women’s Championship in 2018-19, as well as the NWSL Shield in 2023 and the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2024, all won with San Diego Wave FC.

As Canada looks to strengthen its legacy after the memorable victory at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which was held in 2021 and brought their first major trophy, Stoney will take up the role next month. This schedule will allow him to familiarize himself with the team before important challenges ahead, his first test being the Pinatar Cup, a three-match tournament which will take place in Spain.
