Casey Stoney has officially been named the new head coach of the Canada Women’s National Soccer Team (CANWNT), a choice that marks a new era for women’s soccer in the country.
Based in Ottawa, Canada, the announcement was made on January 14, highlighting Stoney’s impressive skills. The English tactician previously managed San Diego Wave FC, taking the reins in 2021 after enjoying a successful three-year spell with Manchester United Women’s Football Club. However, his recent stint in San Diego ended in June, with a solid record of 28 wins in 74 matches.
Before that, Stoney demonstrated her managerial talent at Manchester United, securing 52 wins in 77 matches during her tenure, cementing her reputation as one of the leading management figures in the women’s game.

“I am honored to join Canada Soccer as head coach of the women’s national team,” Stoney said, as reported by Olympics.com. She also highlighted the proud heritage of women’s football in Canada, saying: “I look forward to working with such a talented group of players. »
Stoney aims to work with the federation’s new governing bodies to build on past successes and foster the growth of the sport in Canada, both on and off the field. “I can’t wait to live this adventure and engage with the incredible passion of Canadian fans,” she added.
Interestingly, Stoney has a notable bond with Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, having previously worked together in the National Women’s Soccer League. Under Stoney’s tutelage, Sheridan flourished, winning the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year in their inaugural season together.

As Team Canada looks to build on its historic victory at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where it won its first major trophy three years ago, Stoney is ready to lead the way. She will begin her role next month, giving her ample opportunity to get to know her new team ahead of the challenges ahead. His first big test will come during the Pinatar Cup, a three-match tournament taking place in Spain.
