Japan was hit by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake in its southern region. The city of Miyazaki, on the island of Kyushu, is the epicenter. Attention is now shifting to a tsunami warning.

As soon as the 6.9 magnitude earthquake was felt (finally estimated at 6.8), Japan issued a tsunami alert, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Waves of more than one meter are feared after this earthquake which occurred at 2:19 p.m. French time. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has advised the entire population to stay away from coastlines as a precaution.

Surrounding Pacific countries, such as the Philippines further south, were quick to respond. Seismologists from the PHIVOLCS institute have already communicated: “The 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the southern part of Japan did not generate any threat to the Philippines.”

However, they recalled that since tsunamis are often likely to repeat themselves, it is necessary to avoid the sea and coastal areas.

Japan is no stranger to seismic movements and its disastrous material and human consequences: between 1990 and 2022, it is the fourth country in the world to have suffered the most earthquakes: 94. China (182), the Indonesia and Iran (108) are the only countries more affected.
