Tennis – Australian Open 2025: Draper beats Navone
After having struck a big blow during the US Open – semi-final, while he had previously only passed the second round once in a Grand Slam, to reach the eighth – Jack Draper is now expected.
With this new pressure on his shoulders, the British left-hander managed to get through the first round of the Australian Open. With forceps.
Opposed to the Argentinian Mariano Navone, 47th in the world, Draper, 18th, needed five sets and 4:01 to win 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Draper, 23, chose not to play any preparation tournaments before arriving in Melbourne – just like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev – and therefore opened his account in 2025.
In the second round, Draper, seeded number 15, will face Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.
