Stefanos Tsitsipas is undoubtedly the only player who led two sets to zero in the final of a Grand Slam tournament, at Roland-Garros in 2021, without the almost unanimity of the press gallery – except the Greek journalist who follows all year – don’t give him the slightest chance of winning. Certainly, the opponent was Novak Djokovic, tennis boa constrictor, the specialist in slow death and reversals of fortune. But the disbelief was also, undoubtedly, due to him, Tsitsipas, champion who already 4 years ago gave the feeling that he will always be missing something to go to the end.
In 2021, the Athenian with the physique of a Greek god still embodied the future of tennis, an advantage he owed to his victory in Melbourne two years earlier in the round of 16 over Roger Federer, winner of the two previous editions. Since 2021, the handsome Stefanos has played (and lost) another Grand Slam final against Djokovic, in 2023 at the Australian Open (where he was also a semi-finalist in 2021 and 2022). He remained between fourth and sixth place in the ATP rankings for four years, which was in reality already a regression while the Big 3 was falling apart – Nadal and Federer injured then retired, Djokovic intermittent from the show. Since then, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, Daniil Medvedev and especially Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have passed him in front and blocked his path to the semi-finals, when he did not fall early against a non-ranked player.
