Tennis – Australian Open 2025: Pegula beats Joint

American Jessica Pegula, seeded No. 7, qualified for the second round of the Australian Open, largely dominating Australian wild card Maya Joint (6-3, 6-0) on Monday.

In the second set, Pegula, imposing her pace from the baseline, lost only 13 points, and only four on her serve.

In the second round, Pegula, ranked 7th in the WTA, will face the Belgian Elise Mertens or the Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic.

Maya Joint, 18 years old and 105th in the world, revealed herself by reaching the quarter-finals in Hobart ahead of the Australian Open.

She won her first match on the main circuit by passing the first round of the US Open last year, after extricating herself from qualifying.
