While their net was deserted, the Stars put pressure on in the last two minutes of play, notably on a six-on-five numerical advantage. With 52 seconds left, the Stars cut the lead to one goal when Evgenii Dadanov scored his 12th goal of the season.
This late-game push wasn’t enough for the Stars as the Senators held on to score a 3-2 victory, their second in a row. Sunday’s victory marked the second time this season that the Senators swept a two-game series in two days.
In both cases, the same goaltender defended the Senators’ net in those back-to-back victories. Sunday’s win followed Leevi Meriläinen’s 5-0 shutout win over the Penguins in Pittsburgh on Saturday night. The other such occasion took place on December 13 and 14, led by victorious goalkeeper Linus Ullmark. Like Meriläinen this weekend, Ullmark’s first victory was a shutout, a 3-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, followed by a 3-2 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Senators will return to action on Tuesday when they head to Long Island to face the New York Islanders for the third and final time this season. The puck will be dropped at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
