The disaster broke out in the middle of the night from Sunday January 12 to Monday January 13, 2025 in the town of Conques-sur-Orbiel. Around twenty firefighters were mobilized for this intervention, during which fortunately there were no injuries to be reported…
This Monday, January 13 in the morning, firefighters were still on site in Conques-sur-Orbiel, rue du Pic de Nore, where a home was completely destroyed by a fire during the night. It was at 3:20 a.m. that the emergency services were alerted by the occupant of the premises, a lady aged over 90, who was not sleeping and noticed that there was a strong release of smoke at her home. And for good reason, a chimney fire had just broken out on the ground floor of this home and threatened to spread to the first floor with a strong release of smoke. The old lady apparently managed to get out of her house on her own.
Very quickly, around twenty firefighters from the emergency centers of Carcassonne, Trèbes and Salsigne were engaged in this nighttime intervention in the town of Conques-sur-Orbiel, with several fire vans and the large ladder. We are less than ten kilometers from Carcassonne. On site, there were first of all accessibility problems to the burning house, given the narrowness of the streets and the parked vehicles. Firefighters ultimately had to fight for several hours on various fronts to prevent the flames from spreading to adjoining homes. Six people had to be evacuated from their homes for the duration of the firefighters’ intervention. “We managed to maintain the disaster from the ground floor, but the house was completely destroyed with part of the roof collapsing,” said Captain Jean-Baptiste Fromont, head of the rescue center. from Carcassonne.
This Monday, January 13 in the morning, the firefighters were still on site to secure the premises and carry out the necessary ventilation operations, in the adjoining homes where the thick smoke spread. Alerted in the middle of the night, the mayor of Conques-sur-Orbiel Jean-François Juste went to the scene with the firefighters and the gendarmerie. According to our information, the home in the damaged house was able to be relocated by members of his family who live in the town. The six evacuated people were able to return to their homes.
