HERITAGE – A heritage jewel attacked by flames. The Kernault manor, located in the town of Mellac, in Finistère, was ravaged by a major fire this Sunday, January 12. The fire started from the frame of the monument in the morning, and the entire roof was burned despite the intervention of the firefighters.
“This morning, a fire broke out in the frame and destroyed a large part of the building which had been under restoration since 2020”indicated the prefecture, specifying that the flames had not caused any casualties. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage. The fire was impressive, as you can see in the images below.

“When I received the alert, I opened my shutters and immediately understood that it was serious. I saw black smoke. It’s terrible”declared the mayor of the town, Franck Chapoulie, at the Telegram. “The first alert, given by a witness, located a fire starting from an attic window, but it is, at present, impossible to know exactly where the fire started”he added.
The Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, informed on “the framework and the roof are completely destroyed”. Built in the 15th century, this manor is classified as a historic monument and had just been restored.

“The walls were able to be preserved”
The Kernault manor has been the property of the Department of Finistère since 1990. The president of the Breton department, Maël De Calan, was moved by this fire, mentioning “a very big waste and a very big sadness”. The Breton elected official also recalled that the restoration work, which extended over six years and cost 4.6 million euros, was close to being completed. The second phase, started in 2023, was due to end in March 2025.

In total, the fire mobilized “ 77 firefighters and numerous fire-fighting machines »indicated the prefecture. The intervention of the firefighters made it possible to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to the chapel adjacent to the damaged building. “The walls (of the manor editor’s note) were able to be preserved,” also notes Maël De Calan, who praised the work of the firefighters.
“Thousands of visitors pass through the gates of the manor and the gates of the garden every year,”recalled the president of the Breton department, before promising that the mansion “ would be reborn from its ashes ».
