This North African country will increase its natural gas production: new discoveries in the Mediterranean

Egypt, a North African country will now boost its natural gas production thanks to new discoveries. The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources published the information on January 12, 2025.

Indeed, the British company BP has completed the drilling of two new gas wells in the Raven offshore field, located in the Mediterranean.

This work, carried out using the Volaris DS12 drillship, began during the second half of 2024.

The teams worked hard to connect these new wells to existing infrastructure, thus making it possible to anticipate gas production by three months.

Natural gas production with the two new wells is expected to start in February 2025.

Natural gas: Egypt wants to make other discoveries in the Mediterranean

Building on its success, the Volaris DS12 drillship immediately headed to a new site, BP’s King block, still in the Mediterranean.

Geologists hope to discover new reservoirs of natural gas in older geological layers, called Lower Miocene.

The aim is to achieve this target by the end of February 2025. If these explorations are successful, the extracted gas will be directly injected into the West Nile Delta project networks, thus strengthening local production.

Note that these initiatives are part of a broader strategy of the Egyptian Ministry of Oil aimed at stimulating offshore drilling activities in the Mediterranean.

BP is not the only oil company Egypt is banking on. Other companies such as Chevron, ExxonMobil and Eni are also exploring the region.

These projects aim to meet the growing needs for natural gas and consolidate Egypt’s position as a key player in the energy sector.
