IN PICTURES – At least fifteen people died in the flames. A resurgence of winds this Sunday could complicate the work of firefighters.

The wind is picking up again this Sunday around Los Angeles. Some gusts reaching 100 km/h are expected, i.e. speeds higher than those recorded at the start of the fire on Tuesday. “These winds, combined with dry air and dry vegetation, will keep the fire threat in Los Angeles County high”warned Anthony Marrone, the county fire chief.

Emergency crews in various locations dropped fire retardants on the Palisades fire to stop its spread. This chemical is colored bright pink to help crews see where it has been deposited. This substance, made up of salts, is believed to slow the spread of a fire by changing the way it burns.

In total, more than 150,000 people have been evacuated or fled. BBC reporters report the dismay of residents of a street in Altadena, who have lived next to each other all their lives. Now, they almost no longer recognize the neighborhood. “My God, everything is gone”Daron collapses, his voice breaking. The Californian spots a charred lemon tree on his lawn, with some burning fruit. “If I can get a seed, we can replant a tree”he said.
