Prefect François-Xavier Bieuville specified that the tropical storm should, according to forecasts, pass within 110 km of the southern coasts of the archipelago. “We even have systems that tell us 75 km,” he underlined during a press conference in Mamoudzou this morning.
According to Météo-France forecasts, the meteorological phenomenon should travel the Mozambique Channel from north to south, hitting the northern tip of Madagascar head-on, passing off the southern coasts of Mayotte, then reaching Mozambique, already heavily damaged by Chido, then veer towards the east and touch Madagascar again at the southern tip.
-Météo-France forecasts “a significant rainy and windy deterioration”, citing “very heavy rains which could cause flooding”.
Forecasters, however, anticipate a weakening of the cyclone during the night from Saturday to Sunday “to the stage of a strong tropical storm, before circulating off the south of Mayotte” on Sunday.
