KATIE McCABE has stepped forward to praise teammate Niamh Fahey, who has officially announced her retirement from international football.

The Republic of Ireland stalwart is stepping down after an illustrious career, amassing an impressive collection of 115 caps, including an appearance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. In an emotional farewell statement, Fahey reflected on her cherished memories in wearing the green jersey.

“What an extraordinary career you have had, always demonstrating the utmost integrity, professionalism and passion in representing our country. The team, fans and the game will deeply feel your absence. Welcome to a new chapter, Niamhus!” McCabe said.

Defender Caitlin Hayes expressed her feelings, saying: “Although our time together was brief, it was a true privilege to step on the field alongside you!”

Midfielder Lily Agg joined the chorus of well-neighbors, saying: “Amazing Fah, you are an amazing woman. I wish you all the best for the future. Big hugs and lots of love always!”

Stephanie Roche, who herself walked away from the game last October, hailed Fahey as a legend, saying: “One of the best to ever wear the jersey. A great player and an even better person.”

Jess Ziu celebrated his career with the phrase: “Amazing career,” while Ruesha Littlejohn added affectionately: “I’ve loved you for a long time, Grandpa. You’re one of the best! It’s been a real pleasure to create memories that will last a lifetime.”

Fahey’s last appearance came in December in a heartbreaking play-off match against Wales, which saw the team fail to qualify for Euro 2025.
