Many rivers burst their banks in Normandy and Brittany between Wednesday January 8 and Thursday January 9. While some received an alert early enough to predict the disaster, others woke up with their feet in the water.

An elderly resident of Gournay-en-Bray (Seine-Maritime), must return to her nursing home by boat, Thursday January 9. “I’m not going out, I didn’t know it was flooded like that”she laments. Some 56 people are being evacuated in the town. Armand Sauty lives on the banks of the Epte, his house is invaded by several centimeters of water. The man had just redone his bathroom after a previous flood.

“It’s been five years since I bought it, two years since I lived in it, it was a ruin, I redid everything and it’s carnage”deplores Armand. In , the Orne has also lost its bed and spreads out in the fields. In Clécy (Calvados), the alert was given at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Emmanuel, restaurateur, was able to anticipate: “We’re not going to say that we were caught off guard, unlike last year”he admits. Some drivers in Brittany, however, had an unpleasant surprise. At midday this Thursday, 7 departments remain on orange alert for floods.
