If Christmas is synonymous with generosity, it is also synonymous with disappointment for some recipients of unwanted gifts. Every year, the day after the holidays, many Swiss turn to resale platforms like Ricardo to give new life to these “bad presents”. In 2024, this trend was further confirmed, with a 24% increase in second-hand item ads posted after Christmas, compared to the period before the holidays.
A sweater that’s too big, a book you’ve already read, or a toy for children who have outgrown it? So many presents that end up ending up online, looking for a new owner. From December 26, 2024 to January 5, 2025, no fewer than 407,900 second-hand items were posted on Ricardo. Francesco Vass, the company’s managing director, observes: “More and more users are choosing to pass on their inappropriate gifts to someone who will be happier with them. This actively contributes to the Swiss circular economy.” Electronic items replaced by newer models at Christmas are also among the most resold products. Unused smartphones, tablets or gadgets quickly find buyers.
In Switzerland, the average spend on Christmas gifts amounts to 283 francs per person, according to the statistics portal for market data Statista. This unbridled generosity sometimes leads to poorly targeted gifts, but also to opportunities for other consumers. The days following Christmas are among the busiest times of the year on Ricardo.
