Filming canceled, Oscars postponed… Hollywood brought to a halt by the deadly fire in Los Angeles

The fire which killed at least five people in Los Angeles forced studios to interrupt ongoing filming. The announcement of the Oscar nominations was also delayed by several days.

The Hollywood industry has also been hit by the ferocious fires that have raged since Wednesday in Los Angeles. The fire caused the deaths of at least five people and now threatens the Hollywood district, which residents have been ordered to evacuate.

FilmLA, the agency that authorizes filming in the Los Angeles area, issued a statement clarifying that “resources normally made available to support filming would not be available during the current state of emergency.”

“The Los Angeles County Fire Department has requested the withdrawal of all filming permits in the cities of Altadena, La Crescenta, La Canada/Flintridge and Pasadena. Further withdrawals are possible.”

“Fallout” postponed

Several shoots were interrupted due to the fires. Among the collateral victims of the fires are the series Abbott Elementary, Suits: L.A., NCIS, NCIS: Origins, The Pitt et Grey’s Anatomy as well as the talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Amazon has also postponed the start of filming for season 2 of Fallout. This must take place in the Santa Clarita region, which is also affected by the fires. Filming is scheduled to begin this Friday.

Previews of the biopic Unstoppable on disabled wrestler Anthony Robles, Better Manoffbeat biopic of Robbie Williams and horror film Wolf Man were also canceled, as was that of Back in Action with Cameron Diaz.

The announcement of the Oscar nominations, scheduled for Friday January 17, has been postponed by two days, and will be held on Sunday January 19. Which gives the Hollywood industry two more days to vote for the supreme awards of the 7th .

The emotion of Adrien Brody

Several personalities from the cinema industry have spoken publicly about these fires. Adrien Brody spoke with emotion about the victims of the flames, receiving an award for his film The Brutalist lors des New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

“I send my prayers to all the families and all the animals” victims of the fires, he declared, quoted by Variety. “I want to thank and salute the courage of the firefighters and their sacrifice which deserves all our recognition.”

At the same event, director Jim Jarmusch expressed his concern for the residents of Los Angeles while denouncing climate skeptics. “It’s time to wake up,” he insisted.

About 1,500 buildings have been destroyed and more than 100,000 Los Angeles residents have been forced to flee in the face of flames since Wednesday. The authorities fear discovering new deaths.

A huge fire has already devastated last month the town of Malibu, not far from Los Angeles. Several personalities like the singer Cher, actor Dick Van Dyke or even the actress Mira Sorvino were forced to leave their home.
