The scandal surrounding Japanese Takata airbags installed on millions of vehicles is growing. According to an investigation by the Radio France Investigation Unit, at least 15 people were killed in France because of these airbags.

THE “killer airbags”. This is the name of the defective airbags attributed by the victims’ families. Installed in hundreds of thousands of vehicles, they are sometimes fatal and fulfill their primary mission: saving lives. According to Radio France, their explosion has already killed 15 people in France since 2016, including 14 overseas. In May 2023, on the roads of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, Évelyne Saint-Louis, a mother, was killed aboard her used Citroën C3. Her airbag exploded for no apparent reason, throwing metal debris onto her. A deadly shock.

The accident left three children orphans, who received a letter from the car manufacturer after the tragedy. Ruth, one of the victim’s daughters, says she received this letter informing of the dangers involved “one month after death” of his mother. However, it has been ten years since the failures of the airbags of the Japanese equipment manufacturer Takata caused a scandal.
